Ants are not in your pants! Plus a few more ant facts for you…

  • An ant can lift 20 times its own body weight. That’s like you lifting 20 of YOU up in the air!
  • The Argentine Ant will eat almost anything including meats, eggs, oils and fats – but they prefer sweets! Just like you!
  • The odorous house ant smells like coconuts when crushed. Weird!
  • Pavement Ants live in little cracks in the pavement! Careful where you walk!
  • Carpenter Ants prefer to live in dark, damp wood. That doesn’t sound very cozy!

Will bedbugs really bite? Get the bedbug facts…

  • A bedbug is dark red and brown. Its body is flat and it can be found in homes all over the world.
  • Bedbugs sleep during the day and come out during the night to look for blood.
  • Yes – bedbugs DO BITE! Bed bug bites are itchy and you might see little red bumps on your skin.
  • If you are bitten by a bed bug, wash the bite with soap and water – and ask your mom or dad to put calamine lotion on it! Don’t scratch!
  • You can protect yourself from bedbugs! Make sure you change your sheets once a week and keep your floor free of from clothing, toys, shoes, and any other place bugs might try to hide!

Bees, Mosquitoes and Wasps! Oh my!

  • A bees wings flap over 11,000 times per minute!
  • Africanized Bees have been known to live in tires, crates, boxes and empty cars.
  • Mosquitoes don’t really bite – but the females will suck your blood! The males feed on plants.
  • Know the difference between wasps and bees? Wasps' bodies are smooth and appear to have no hair, which is different from a bee’s body.
  • Honeybees store honey all winter long!

Not all spiders are itsy bitsy! Get the spider facts!

  • The world’s largest spider is the male goliath bird-eating spider – with a leg span of 11 inches!
  • The most dangerous species to people are the widow spiders (such as the black widow spider), brown recluse spiders, hobo spiders and two species of sac spiders.

Flies, fleas and moths

  • House flies have been known to carry over 100 different kinds of disease-causing germs!
  • Fruit flies breed around overly ripe, fermenting fruits or vegetables. If you want to get rid of fruit flies, find and eliminate any produce that may be stored out of sight. Old banana peels or apple cores can also attract a lot of flies.
  • Fleas are also known to have incredible jumping power; they can jump up to 150 times the length of their bodies.
  • Moths have millions of overlapping scales, which make up their wings.
